Palakkad Fort: The old granite of Tipu Sultan is situated in the very heart of Palakkad town. It was built by Hyder Ali of Mysore in 1766. The fort was taken over and modified by the British in 1790. It is now preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India.
There is a large ground between the Fort and the Palakkad Town hall, known as Kota Maidanam (Fort Grounds). The ground, which had once served as a stable for the elephants and horses of Tipu's army, is now used to stage cricket matches, exhibitions and public meetings. An open air auditorium called "Rappadi", currently under the preservation of the Archaeological Survey of India, is also located within the spacious grounds of the Fort. Additionally, there is a children's park on one side of the Fort.
Comprises a dam and beautifully landscaped gardens, is situated on the lower hills of the Western Ghats. Lush green lawns Well laid-out flower beds Cool pools, fountains and pathways Rock garden. Boating and fishing facilities are available here. Rope Way, Snake Park, Rock Garden and the aquarium are other atractions. Malampuzha Gardens is famous for a large cement sculpture named Yakshi, created by the famous sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman.
There is also an amusement park, Fantasy Park, 1.5 km away from Malampuzha dam, offering many attractive water games and rides.
Dhoni is a popular trekking place and about 15 km from Palakkad. It takes a three hour trek from the base of the Dhoni hills to reach this reserve forest area with its small, beautiful waterfall.
The Vishwanatha Swamy shrine, the oldest Shiva temple is situated 3 kms from Palakkad. The annual chariot temple is a gala event. The annual 'Ratholsavam' or Chariot Festival at Sree Viswanantha Swamy temple lasts for seven days.
On the last three days, beautifully decorated temple chariots are ceremoniously drawn through the streets by thousands of devotees whose soul stirring chants rent the air. The festival is dominated by three magnificent chariots, bedecked with flowers and flags, each sanctified by the presence of the Lord.Teeming crowds of people and millions of hands try to reach out to be one of the privileged to have the honour of pulling the chariots, as they proceed in stately grandeur.
